Eight students at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa showcased sustainability-focused research projects at the inaugural Office of Sustainability open house, highlighting hands-on solutions for campus challenges like waste reduction, energy monitoring, and green purchasing. Among the featured initiatives was a Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) led by electrical engineering students who developed a smart system to automate gas meter readings using computer vision. These student-led efforts not only inform UH Mānoa’s long-term sustainability goals but also serve as real-world learning labs that bridge classroom theory with impactful campus innovation.
