From Learners to Leaders in Research
At the Colorado School of Mines, the VIPER (Vertically Integrated Projects for Experiential Research) program is transforming how students engage in research by bringing together undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty across disciplines. Students join long-term, credit-bearing projects early in their academic careers, gaining hands-on experience in areas like quantum materials, robotics, and AI while developing technical and leadership skills. The VIP model is a layered mentorship structure in which students grow from learners to mentors, helping to train newer team members and contributing to sustained, large-scale research efforts. This collaborative approach not only deepens learning but also creates a supportive ecosystem where knowledge is continuously passed down, enhancing both research continuity and student development.
