Programming Ethics Into Autonomous Systems
At Stony Brook University, students and researchers are tackling one of the most complex challenges in modern engineering: how to embed ethical decision-making into autonomous vehicles. Because self-driving systems may face unavoidable “dilemma” scenarios, there is no single agreed-upon framework to guide how these decisions should be made, requiring engineers to carefully consider competing values and outcomes. Working within a VIP environment, students engage in interdisciplinary collaboration that prepares them to navigate the evolving intersection of technology and ethics, where technical solutions must also reflect human values. The work highlights how VIP teams are not only advancing innovation but also shaping the broader conversation around responsible AI and the future of autonomous systems.
